ANTIMONY

Properties: a poor conductor of both heat and electricity. It remains stable in dry air and is resistant to dilute acids or alkalis. Additionally, antimony and certain of its alloys will expand when cooled.

Industrial applications: MANUFACTURE - lead-acid batteries, low-friction metals for parts, bearings and pistons; TEXTILES - flame retardant material (esp. antimony trioxide and other compounds); CONSTRUCTION - specialized glass and flame-resistant materials, coatings, paints, and insulation; ELECTRONICS - lead-free solder, semi-conductors, diodes and infrared detectors.

TANTALITE

Properties: high melting point, corrosion resistance, good conductivity.

NIOBIUM

Properties: high melting point, corrosion resistance, good conductivity, high dielectric constant and stability, high strength and resistance at extreme temperatures.

Industrial applications: SUPERCONDUCTOR – niobium-titanium and niobium-tin alloys for superconducting magnets in MRI machines, particle accelerators and other scientific equipment; ELECTRONICS – capacitors;  niobium phosphide nanowires for super conductors and chips.
